The recent decision of Houlton High School to move to the MPA, the accompanying phasing out of the varsity Knights team in Aroostook Football and the high likelihood that the Milo Panthers will be forced to fold into the BCH team have left Aroostook Football with only two teams at present and no likelihood of finding other teams to join the 8-man football program. Consequently, the varsity Huskies team will make the transition to 11 man football this fall and play games against a group consisting of teams from BCH/Milo, Calais, Erskine and Medomak Valley (with an outside possibility of another team). This will provide us with an 8-10 game season and provide more playing opportunities for our kids since there are more players on the field at all times. Obviously (and sadly) this decision puts the Valley Mustangs in a difficult position; with no teams playing eight man football but them, they are forced to attempt to develop a squad of around 25 players to be able to compete in an 11-man league or fold. If they are forced to fold, any of their players wanting to continue to play football and able to commit to the commute will be welcome on our team. This decision in no way affects the Junior and PeeWee programs (which will continue to operate and play 8-man football as always). |
